Manchester United have a goal to be “the best” team in the world, on and off the pitch. They enlisted our help and we worked with them to achieve their vision. We laid out a core strategy coupled with a solid energy saving programme. We called it our “Energy & Carbon Reduction Challenge”; it was launched from “Boardroom to Boot room”.
What was involved in this project?
- A detailed Energy Policy including a full energy review, with a staff engagement programme and workshops
- A Carbon Reduction Action Plan for Old Trafford, training grounds, MUTV & offices. This included a road map of low carbon technology improvements and strategic replacement of LED lighting has been adopted
- Customised energy monitoring & targeting reporting system incorporating smart meter technology
- Building Management System improvements
- ‘Old Water to New’ concept using reed bed technology to clean and recycle dirty water to provide water for the pitches, and the introduction of a bore hole to assist with water self-sufficiency
What were the project results?
- 36% reduction in energy use
- Total energy saving of over £3.7m
- Annual energy savings of over £700K
- Ten Consecutive “Year on Year” energy and carbon reductions
- Annual Carbon reduction of 3,600 tonnes – equivalent to energy produced by 600 homes
- Manchester United placed joint 1st in the first year of the CRC league table
