What were the project results? 

• MA designed lighting replacement strategies which were undertaken by HSS Hire to comply with industry lighting lux levels
• Taking into account the lighting replacement cost, the net benefit saving was £393 per month, increasing to £1,052 year 4 and 5
• The project was fully funded, ensuring no capital outlay was required
• The lighting refurbishments were suitable for 100% Enhance Capital Allowance relief, providing a benefit of £3,990
• Energy saving of 98,865 kWh
• Total annual savings of £12,626 p.a
• Annual carbon reduction of 53,644 kgCO2e

This resulted in HSS achieving compliance with industry lux standards, as well as delivered energy and cost savings.

• ‘Old Water to New’ concept using reed bed technology to clean and recycle dirty water to provide water for the pitches, and the introduction of a bore hole to assist with water self-sufficiency

• 36% reduction in energy use
• Total energy saving of over £3.7m
• Annual energy savings of over £700K
• Ten Consecutive “Year on Year” energy and carbon reductions
• Annual Carbon reduction of 3,600 tonnes – equivalent to energy produced by 600 homes

What were the project aims?

• Produce and deliver a strategic response strategy to produce the target energy saving.

What were the project results? 

• MA produced a Reduce Strand of the Energy Strategy, which identified a road map for developing energy technologies and opportunities derived from an Energy Review and Energy Audits
• Investment Grade Energy Audits were conducted across 14 
• 27 Energy Conservation Measures were identified, including Major LED lighting replacement, lighting controls, BEMS improvements and voltage optimisation
• Building Energy Management System (BEMS) audits and optimisation to over 90 sites which resulted in savings over £2m
• LED Lighting Replacement – this was the largest replacement programme delivered in the UK
• Identified total energy reduction of 15% p.a 
• Heating plant operation reduced by >20% in Nottingham DC
• LED lighting introduced measured savings between 60-80%

Furthermore, the projects mentioned above were undertaken with no operational disruption.

The Trust secured NHS capital funding for a lighting project of £1.7m, however, proposed costs for upgrading the hospitals lighting systems were significantly above the level of funding available (circa £1.8m).  Through previous successful partnerships with the iFM, Maloney Associates (MA) were asked to give a project appraisal to see if anything could be done.

Through a combination of value engineering and keen negotiation, the cost of the project was successfully reduced to under £1m.

Furthermore, this project was delivered during the Covid-19 pandemic, which posed its own challenges. Not only this, but due to the nature of this client, there had to be no impact to patient care during the whole process. Therefore, 95% of the work was carried out during the night to minimise disruption.

What were the project results? 

• Significant improvement in light quality and aesthetic appearance for both patients and staff alike.
• Maximised financial benefits of £304,000 per annum
• Return on investment in less than 3 years
• Reduction of 1,661,000 kWh
• Equivalent to 900 tonnes carbon emissions
• Equivalent to taking 4,140 vehicles off the road every year
• According to staff, they no longer need to change failed fluorescent tubes on a daily basis
• Improved 7-year parts and labour warranty means LED lighting is effectively
  ‘fit & forget’
• Improved infection control from reduced cleaning regime for Domestics

What were the key project objectives?

• Minimise the carbon footprint and environmental impacts
• Minimise maintenance costs, resource use and lighting failures
